graduate vacation scheme

As part of our training contract application process we offer the opportunity to come into the firm for a three day placement. Two days are spent with a legal team learning about the work they do, undertaking research tasks and having the opportunity to really understand what it is like to work in a legal environment. We try to offer as varied a selection of placements of possible across all of our locations. We find that this is an invaluable way of potential trainee solicitors getting to understand the way the firm works and what kind of firm we are.

The third day is spent on an assessment day where candidates will learn more about the firm; undergo psychometric tests, a formal interview and group/drafting exercises. The feedback we receive from their supervisor and the results from all of the assessment day tasks allows us to assemble a bigger picture of the candidate when deciding whether or not they will go through to the next stage of the recruitment process.

Pathways to Law

We have been involved with the Pathways to Law Scheme in conjunction with Southampton University since 2008.  The programme is designed to promote access to the legal profession for people from state school backgrounds starting with selected students from Year 11 until completion of their 'A' Level studies and their entry into university.  The students are selected on the basis of having the necessary academic ability and an interest in a career in the law.  They come from backgrounds where traditionally few manage to convert this potential and interest into a career.

The format of our Pathways to Law Programme includes two seminar days that focus on skills useful when pursuing a career in law in addition to a day's work experience with one of our trainee solicitors.

PRIME – increasing access to legal careers

PRIME is a new initiative that Blake Lapthorn has recently become involved in along with twenty-two other leading UK law firms. We are one of the founding members of this profession-wide initiative, which creates fair access to quality work experience for young people from less privileged backgrounds. We pledge that each year we will provide a number of high quality places to young people (Year 9 to 13) from local schools and colleges.  This involves:

  • at least 30-35 hours of work experience per place
  • help in developing key business and personal skills
  • showing the range of careers available in a legal profession both legal and non-legal (such as IT, accounting, HR, and marketing/business development) and the potential routes into each career.

For further information about the PRIME initiative, please visit the PRIME website.

PRIME placements are available from Blake Lapthorn's offices in Oxford and Southampton - for more information about these, please contact us at: recruitment@bllaw.co.uk or on 023 8085 7265.
