Farm workers in England and Wales will see their wage rates increase by 4.5% from October 2007. The Agricultural Wages Board met in London on 15 and 16 May with farming representatives to reach an agreement.

It has been agreed that Grades 2-6 will get a pay increase of 4.5%, while Grade 1 workers (basic trainees) will get an increase of 3.2%.

The new rates will be as follows:

  • Grade 1 – basic trainee – increase from £5.35 to £5.52/hr
  • Grade 2 – standard worker – increase from £5.74 to £6.00/hr
  • Grade 3 – lead worker – increase from £6.31 to £6.60/hr
  • Grade 4 – craft worker – increase from £6.77 to £7.08/hr
  • Grade 5 – supervisory grade – increase from £7.18 to 7.50/hr
  • Grade 6 – farm management grade – increase from £7.75 to £8.10/hr

These proposals were subject to a six-week consultation, and a confirmation meeting on 28 June. The new rates took effect from 1 October 2007.
