Reminder to farmers – compliance with Feed Hygiene
Regulations

The majority of farms and
businesses which produce or use animal feed will be required to
comply fully with feed hygiene law from 1 January 2008.
The Feed Hygiene Regulations
were introduced to ensure that animal feed is produced and used
safely and can be traced in the event of a food or feed incident.
Feed businesses that were subject to previous legislation, ie
mainly businesses that manufactured, marketed or used feed
additives or pre-mixtures of feed additives, were required to
comply with all the requirements of the Feed Hygiene Regulations by
1 January 2006. There was, however, a two-year transitional period
for other feed businesses, although they had to register by 1
January 2006 (unless exempt through membership of other official
schemes).
This means that most farms and
businesses that produce or use animal feed, including livestock
farms that produce food products for human consumption, fish farms
and arable farms that grow, use or sell crops for use as animal
feed, will need to comply with feed hygiene requirements from 1
January 2008. These include measures to:
- prevent contamination and spoilage of
feed
- keep equipment for mixing, storing or
transporting feed clean
- maintain records of feed used or
sold
Such farms and feed businesses
must also provide a statement of compliance with these requirements
to their local authority by 1 January 2008.
