charities "must do more to demonstrate accountability"
According to Charles Nall, Chair of the Charity Finance
Directors' Group, charities must do more to demonstrate their
accountability and transparency to donors and beneficiaries.
Nall told delegates at the CFDG northern conference in Leeds
that charities need to be able to pass a "Ronseal test" – in order
to demonstrate that they did exactly what it said on the tin - but
he also said that many charities would currently fail this
test.
"At the moment, we benefit from an enormous trust from the
British public", said Mr Nall, "but if we can’t show we deserve
that trust, we will lose it, and we will lose the special place we
hold in British society."
He also said impact measurement in most charities was badly
underdeveloped, adding that although in recent years charities had
got better at measuring what they did, the sector still had a lot
of work to do.
