Charity Commission reports on the Arts Council of England

The Charity Commission has published a report into the Arts Council of England, which provides funding for and generally supports the arts in England.

The Commission became involved when it was informed that a grant had been given to one of the charity’s trustees, without appropriate authorisation. The Commission's report focuses on how the incident came to occur, and the steps that the charity has taken to ensure that the same thing does not happen again.

The Charity Commission's report recommends that the trustees have comprehensive training in respect of their duties and responsibilities, particularly relating to trustee benefits and managing conflicts of interest. The report also highlights the importance of managing conflicts of interest for trustees. Incidents such as this can diminish the public's trust in a charity and the charitable sector in general. Trustees need to be open and transparent, and should advise their fellow trustees of any actual or potential conflicts of interest as soon as they arise.
