rail operator gets set to follow Olympics procurement model

Network Rail is planning to adopt the Olympic Delivery Authority's (ODA) procurement strategy for the re-development of Birmingham New Street station.

The operator is looking to appoint a 'delivery partner', in much the same way as the ODA has appointed CLM to deliver the 2012 projects, for the £550 million scheme. The prospective partners are understood to be one of Carillion, Balfour Beatty and Mace (the latter being, itself, one of the CLM consortium). Network Rail's strategy has attracted interest in the construction press particularly given the perceived shift from traditional 'contracting' to a more collaborative partnering-style approach.
