  • Immigration issues: how to get a license to teach international students
In these challenging economic times, many independent schools are looking to international markets to increase their pupil numbers. Although many schools are aware that in order to teach pupils from overseas they must obtain a Sponsor Licence under the immigration rules, our experience is that many schools are not up-to-speed with how to navigate the application process and are not fully aware of the obligations place on their school once a licence has been granted.
  • Trustee Indemnity Insurance
The Charities Act 2006 introduced a new power enabling charities to purchase indemnity insurance to protect trustees from personal liability. This means a charity wishing to purchase Trustee Indemnity Insurance no longer needs Charity Commission consent or an express power in its governing document.
  • Independent schools and charity status: the speculation continues
The hot potato of the charitable status of independent schools hit the front page of The Times during August 2007 following an interview with Dame Suzi Leather, chair woman of the Charity Commission. This information sheet steps back from the headlines and recaps on the legal position in England and Wales for schools and speculates on the impact charity status may have on them.
