At least half of this Summer edition of Employment Issues concerns developments in or arising out of European legislation. Enforced changes to domestic law, and constraints on the judicial interpretation of it, are becoming increasingly more apparent through the wealth of European directives affecting employment law. We ignore them at our peril!

In this Issue we look at the further changes to the Sex Discrimination Act which came in, rather hurriedly, in April, and some important decisions and Opinions from the European Court of Justice. We also report on decisions closer to home about disciplinary warnings and discrimination questionnaires as well as a round up of developments in legislation and key cases.

Within the Employment Law group I am pleased to announce that a dedicated Advocacy team has been established. This new initiative builds on our existing commitment to provide advocacy services and consolidates our expertise into a specialist unit. Anthony Cooper (Partner) will be leading the team of experienced advocates who will continue to provide our professional approach, representing our clients at Employment Tribunals throughout the UK, from the commencement of proceedings right through to the final hearing. This centre of excellence will enhance our already strong reputation in this area.

As always, I and my colleagues look forward to facing with you the challenges ahead in a practical and commercial way.

Max Craft

Head of Employment Law
