Under the food hygiene regulations food business establishments (other than retail) that produce or handle food of animal origin must, with some exceptions, be approved by the competent authority.
As part of its policy to reduce the administrative burden of regulation, the Food Standards Agency is consulting on proposals to reduce the costs of Regulation five of the Meat Products Regulations 2003.
EU hygiene legislation providing specific rules relating to products of animal origin requires those operating slaughterhouses to request, receive, check and act upon food chain information for all animals except wild game.
New legislation regulating permitted minerals and vitamins in foods and food supplements came into force in England on 1 January 2010.
