UK Government releases details of changes to rules for students and education

The Government has now released details of the changes to the Immigration Rules governing both students and education providers. The rule changes take effect in a staggered series of introductions, the first of which will be effective from 21 April 2011.

From that date, education providers not already on the Register of Sponsors will need to meet higher criteria and be registered as Highly Trusted Sponsors. Existing sponsors will need to take steps to secure that accreditation and will be limited on the number of sponsors they can take until they do so.

A new level of English language ability will also come into effect. The level rises to B1 or B2 depending on the level of academic study to be undertaken.

From July 2011, increased obligations on some students to show maintenance will be introduced, as well as restricting the ability to work for new entrants to the UK. Only students on courses at NQF level 7 or above and lasting 12 months or more will be allowed to bring dependants.
