professional regulatory seminar with guest speaker Alan
Meyrick
details
Blake Lapthorn's Professional Regulatory team were pleased to
welcome
Alan Meyrick as our guest speaker for
our winter seminar held on Thursday 24 November.
Why do we regulate? Is public input into regulation vital to its
success? And how might we respond to a rapidly changing world,
where new technologies and increasing globalisation are shaping a
very different society?
These searching questions were posed by Alan, Chief Executive of
the General Teaching Council for England (GTCE), who examined the
hot topic of professionally-led regulation in his timely and
thought-provoking presentation.
Drawing on his experience of being at the helm of the ‘short-lived
project’ of teaching regulation, Mr Meyrick explored the who,
why, what, where and how of regulation, arguing in favour of a
balance between activity, practitioner and setting.
He highlighted the challenges created by changes in practice, as
unregulated groups - such as healthcare support workers and
teaching assistants - take on tasks that were once the sole domain
of regulated professionals.
Understanding the implications of the latest issues affecting the
sector and the most up to date regulatory case law is important for
anyone working within the regulatory field.
Blake Lapthorn also provided an informative update on the latest
case law. After the seminar there was an opportunity to network and
to discuss issues affecting the regulatory sector with the speakers
and delegates.
