a summary response to the public
consultation on the draft regulations, setting out proposals for
the General Medical Council (Constitution Order)
2008

On 16 October 2008, the Department of Health issued a
consultation report in response to the public consultation on the
draft regulations setting out proposals for the General Medical
Council (GMC) Constitution Order 2008.
On 1 May 2008, the Department of Health published a consultation
paper 'General Medical Council (Constitution Order) – a paper
for consultation'. The consultation paper was accompanied by a
draft order setting out a proposed constitution for the General
Medical Council. The provisions included the composition of the
GMC, terms of office of GMC members, criteria for disqualification
from appointments as a member of the GMC, and quorum of the GMC.
The consultation took place over an eight-week period between
16 May and 11 July 2008 and followed on from the recommendations in
the White Paper 'Trust, assurance and safety – the regulation of
health professional in the 21st century'.
The consultation report contains a detailed breakdown of
responses to each of the questions as contained within the
consultation document, and the report itself summarises the
consultation responses received in relation to each question, as
well as the government's position.
The order has now been laid before parliament.
