The Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) welcomed the Appointment Commission's agreement to appoint Professor Tony Hazel as chair of the NMC's governing Council.

The new Council will take effect from 1 January 2009, subject to the new Nursing & Midwifery Council (Constitution) Order 2008 coming into force. Professor Hazel will lead the NMC's 14-strong Council, which is the first to have equal representation of lay and professional members. Professor Hazel is also the first chair to be directly appointed following an open recruitment campaign.
