British Psychological Society statutory regulation update

The Department of Health is due to table the legislation regulating psychologists in October, in both Edinburgh and Westminster.

The legislation proposes nine protective adjectival titles and two generic titles. As a result of the legislation, psychologists would need to be registered with the Health Professions Council to practise under one of the titles. The British Psychological Society has continued to raise concerns that having multiple protected titles will be confusing for the public and allow the untrained and unqualified to practise under other unprotected titles.

If the legislative timetable proceeds as planned, the HPC register will open on 1 July 2009. Those chartered psychologists with one of the seven existing adjectival titles and a practising certificate will be transferred onto the statutory register automatically.
