On 2 October 2008, The Times reported that Michael Clarkson, a classics teacher from the Shrewsbury School, had been removed from the General Teaching Council (GTC) register.

Mr Clarkson had been in charge of 29 pupils from the school during a tennis trip to Portugal in April 2006. A committee of the GTC heard evidence that the pupils were not subject to curfews and were allowed to consume alcohol during the trip. Mr Clarkson admitted to having allowed a 17-year old pupil to use his room for sex and further admitted to having used a video camera to record the incident. Mr Clarkson denied having consumed alcohol whilst in charge of the pupils.

The committee was satisfied that Mr Clarkson had consumed alcohol on the final night of the trip. Mr Clarkson was found guilty of unacceptable professional conduct and removed from the register.
