fines refunded in Sheffield

Sheffield Council has had to refund thousands of pounds in paid
fines due to irregularities over the traffic signs placed at gates
used by trams. The fines were incurred by motorists whom it was
decided, had not been properly warned of the restrictions on using
these access routes.
Commenting on the story, Philip Somarakis says "The important
lesson to learn is that councils do not always use lawful signs
when imposing a restriction on access routes or parking - the signs
may not be compliant with legislation or may just simply be
misleading. It is always worth investigating the position before
accepting a penalty."
