rising bankruptcy risks for uninsured
drivers

The Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) has been
established for over 60 years to help compensate individuals
injured by negligent and uninsured drivers who cannot be
traced. Where it becomes involved in a case and drivers are
traced, the MIB is committed to recovering the costs of its
involvement where possible.
Two important cases were decided late in 2006
which could see the number of bankruptcies among uninsured drivers
on the rise. These cases concerned uninsured drivers who were
ordered to pay costs amounting to several thousands of pounds and
more and who became subject to bankruptcy orders.
Of the MIB’s approach, its Recovery Manager,
Michael Williams said: "Our first objective when handling a
case is to ensure that the victims are properly compensated.
However, the recent bankruptcy orders highlight our determination
to pursue uninsured drivers and force them to pay for the
consequences of their recklessness".
